Club History
Coed
Y Mwstwr Golf Club officially opened it’s doors in
1995, as a 9 hole, privately owned golf club, and many of
our members hark back to those times.
In
1998, the club was ‘bought’ by the members,
although the land that the course stands on is still leased
from the originally developer. The club is now a members
club, run by a Board of Directors, and various committees,
for the benefit of the members and guests.
In
1995, the course was formed in a series of fields just outside
Coychurch, next to the entrance drive to the Coed Y Mwstwr
Hotel. There were some mature trees, and hedges, but
in the main, the course was defined by the planting of hundreds
of small trees. Those small tress have grown in the
intervening years, and are now between 10 and 15 feet high,
presenting much more formidable hazards.
As
well as the normal out of bounds outside the course, there
are two houses located within the boundaries, and their
land is also out of bounds. This presents some interesting
holes, reminiscent of Spanish and Portuguese golf courses
within developments, where there are out of bounds all along
at least one side of the hole.
In
2004, the club obtained a grant from Sportlot, which has
enabled us to purchase land and create a further 6 holes,
so becoming an 18 hole golf course. These additional
6 holes, which form the 1st to 6th, are on the opposite
side of the Hotel drive from the remainder of the course.
Again, use has been made of the existing mature trees, together
with the planting of numerous new ones, to define the course.
The
official opening of the new holes by the National Assembly
Minister for Sport, Alyn Pugh, took place on July 1st 2005.
Over
the years, the membership has grown, and now stands at over
500. There is a thriving junior
section, with just short of 80 members, and the club
has always prided itself on the youth development policy.
